When I tell people I’m a designer, I often struggle to explain just how impactful my work is without sounding like I’m floating in some artsy-fartsy cloud. It’s not just about making things look pretty; design is a powerful force that can shape how we think, feel, and act.
Most people don’t realize the full extent of design’s impact. I often think it’s because they simply don’t know 😂. Let’s take a step back to the early 20th century, during the rise of propaganda. Despite its sometimes negative connotations, the idea behind propaganda demonstrates a core truth: design has the power to influence and persuade.
Whether it’s product design, branding, or advertising, we as designers have the ability to affect how users interact with and perceive the world. We can guide decisions, evoke emotions, and even shift societal norms. It’s not about just making things look good; it’s about crafting experiences that resonate on a deeper level.
It’s time for people to stop thinking of design as just something “artsy-fartsy.” Design isn’t just about aesthetic appeal; it’s a tool for manipulation and influence. Ever wondered why everyone has a smartphone? It’s not just because you saw one somewhere—it’s the power of design at work. The choices in layout, color, and function are all carefully crafted to make us want and use these devices.
So next time you think design is just about making things look nice, remember that it’s also about creating meaningful experiences that can change the way we live. The next time you pick up your phone or see a well-designed ad, think about the power behind it—and how design is shaping our world, one choice at a time. I guess we’re all doing a bit of voodoo here—just with a lot more pixels and a lot less mysticism.
